During the Clone Wars' final days, a chaotic skirmish erupted aboard the Venator-class Star Destroyer Albedo Brave, commanded by Jedi General Jaro Tapal. This conflict was triggered when the clone troopers within his 13th Battalion received the infamous Order 66 from Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine. The soldiers who had previously fought loyally under Tapal during their successful campaign on the planet Bracca suddenly betrayed their Jedi officers, with the intent to kill both the esteemed Jedi Master and his young apprentice, Cal Kestis.
As Tapal was providing Kestis with mission details regarding their upcoming deployment to Mygeeto, he suddenly perceived the widespread slaughter of Jedi through the Force. Simultaneously, the Clone Commander in charge of the unit received Order 66 and immediately attempted to execute it. However, Tapal swiftly eliminated the commander using his double-bladed lightsaber. Kestis, struggling to grasp the unfolding events, was quickly directed by Tapal to enact an escape plan. The plan involved Kestis navigating the maintenance tunnels to reach the escape pod bay, while Tapal secured the internal blast doors and created a diversion to draw the clone troopers away. Tapal instructed Kestis to launch without him if he failed to arrive in time. The two Jedi then separated, with Tapal heading towards the Star Destroyer's reactor with the intention of overloading it, both to ensure its destruction and to conceal their escape. Throughout their escape, both Jedi encountered and fought clones at various points. Tapal dispatched multiple squads with relative ease, while Kestis found himself overwhelmed. During a fight in the ship's turbolift shaft, Kestis lost his lightsaber when a blaster shot knocked it from his grasp, sending it plummeting to the shaft's bottom. Despite this setback, Kestis aided his master by opening doors along his path. However, a large contingent of clones caught up to them just as they were attempting to access an escape pod. Tapal valiantly defended his unarmed Padawan from the attacking clones but was overwhelmed and struck multiple times by blasterfire. One shot hit the hilt of his lightsaber, breaking it in two. Kestis bravely stepped between the clones and his injured master, sustaining a wound himself. He then used the Force to momentarily slow the clones, allowing both Jedi to board the escape pod and launch towards Bracca.
Aboard the escape pod, Tapal's injuries proved fatal. With his final words, he informed Kestis about his sabotage of the reactor, warned him of the impending war, and urged him to await a signal from the Jedi Council and to trust solely in the Force. Tapal then passed his broken lightsaber to Kestis and died just as the Albedo Brave exploded due to Tapal's reactor sabotage, destroying the vessel and the remaining members of the 13th Battalion.
