In the approximate year of 21 BBY, a brief conflict transpired on a minor asteroid situated within the Cularin asteroid belt.
Millennia prior to the outbreak of the Clone Wars, the Darkstaff—a formidable Sith artifact—annihilated the planet of Oblis found within the Cularin system, transforming the Oblee, a species originally from that world, into ethereal entities then called "shadow lurkers." The Darkstaff extracted energy from the lurkers by means of three focusing crystals, compelling the lurkers to siphon energy from their environment to avoid complete absorption by the artifact.
The remnants of Oblis eventually coalesced into what is now the Cularin asteroid belt, and around 21 BBY, a party of independent operatives journeyed to a diminutive asteroid within the belt, which housed the three crystals. It was there that the shadow lurkers contacted the operatives, imploring them to obliterate the crystals, thereby severing the lurkers' link to the Darkstaff. Nevertheless, the staff discovered the operatives' scheme and dispatched a squad of Believers to thwart the operatives' destruction of the crystals. The Believers touched down on the asteroid and subsequently clashed with the operatives. Despite this, the operatives overcame the cultists and shattered the shards, facilitating the rebirth of the Oblee in their corporeal state.
