A small skirmish took place when a group of starfighters from the New Republic on patrol encountered a reconnaissance force dispatched by Warlord Zsinj. This occurred approximately one month following the New Republic's capture of Borleias.
The Vengeance Derra IV, a Dwarf Star-class freighter that served Zsinj, stealthily entered the Pyria system without announcement. Its name followed New Republic naming conventions to aid in clandestine operations, and its mission was to confirm if the New Republic had actually conquered Borleias. At the time, the only New Republic presence was an X-wing from Rogue Squadron and a pair of Y-wings belonging to Champion Squadron. The arrival of the Vengeance Derra IV initially seemed routine, however Corran Horn, a Rogue pilot, felt uneasy and instructed the Y-wings to investigate more closely. This unease grew when the freighter only gave the correct coded response to the Y-wings' challenge on the second attempt. Instead of stopping for inspection as Corran commanded, the Vengeance Derra IV deployed four TIE fighters and two TIE/sa bombers by opening its cargo bay. The Y-wing pilots used their ion cannons to disable one bomber, shot down the other, and then used proton torpedo barrages to take out the freighter's shields. Horn personally destroyed three TIE fighters, while one of the Y-wings used another proton torpedo to eliminate the fourth. The Vengeance Derra IV, having lost all its fighters, fled into hyperspace, but Rogue Squadron pursued it and ultimately defeated it above Contruum.
