Smapp functioned as an edible item. This food item was on the menu at Dex's Diner, a restaurant that could be found in CoCo Town on the galactic capital planet Coruscant, prior to its destruction in 19 BBY. Before its destruction, Dexter Jettster, the Besalisk who owned the diner, offered roast Smapp with hot barium liquid as a Pantoran plate special for both lunch and dinner on Zhellday for a price of 8.5 credits.
The initial mention of Smapp occurred in Monsters and Aliens from George Lucas, a 1993 non-canon book by Bob Carrau that compiled various concept art pieces from George Lucas's projects. The Smapp entry in this book was presented as an in-universe guide for purchasing and preparing Smapp. According to the book, Smapp were creatures found both as domesticated animals and in the wild throughout the galaxy. The entry featured an image of a Smapp's head, characterized by wrinkled green-brown skin, a small black nose, large orange lips, small gray eyes, a black horn on its side, and a sparse black [hair](/article/hair-legends] ridge along its neck. Domesticated Smapp were noted to be common in the [Leisure Fields], described as being beyond Derso-4. The guide suggested that wild Smapp were preferable for consumption due to their taste, "bogg" consistency, and curling behavior when cooked. It detailed how, when, and where to acquire wild Smapp, noting that older wild Smapp were only suitable for jerky. It suggested that purchasing a wild Smapp with humid, chartreuse egg sacs in-season near a volcanic eruption was a better choice, and capturing a wild specimen was the best option, but also the most time-consuming and challenging.

The entry described a dish called Hydrogenated Smapp, providing a recipe that included a butterflied medium-sized Smapp, six quarts of viscous butter, forty-five fern potatoes, twelve tubes of Herbs de Lunar Eclipse, a pinch of zinc, and garlic. The preparation process involved heating an oven to eight hundred degrees, shaving the Smapp, tenderizing it under its gilled flanks, removing its smoking orifices, and applying a butter-herb mixture with a dental mop. The Smapp then needed to marinate for two gravitational rotations before being seasoned with zinc and secured to a steel roasting board for oven cooking. The cook was to chew garlic while waiting for the creature to detonate, which could take one to three gravitational rotations. Once cooked, the cook used iodized forceps to remove the creature from the oven, season it with ceiling ash, and serve it as a meal sufficient for four to six Hutts. A footnote mentioned that hot barium liquid paired well with the dish during cold winters. The book also advised cooking Smapp over an elliptical flame to minimize solar scars.
Smapp was later incorporated into Legends continuity through its mention as a food item in "Dining at Dex's," a 2009 Hyperspace exclusive article by [Gregory Walker](/article/gregory_walker], presented as an in-universe menu. The article only identified Smapp as an ingredient in a dish at Dex's Diner. While Walker's article mentioned hot barium liquid, it did not confirm that Smapp was a creature, leaving its definitive canonical nature uncertain.
