Socialism

Gran AA Living on Kinyen, the Gran (one of whom is shown) existed within a system of socialism that the Tayan League, the governing power, had put into place. Socialism can be described as a socio-economic philosophy that champions interdependence, with a focus on compassion, community spirit, and cooperative efforts among the individuals that comprise a society. Its goal is prioritizing the wellbeing of the collective over the ambitions of any one person. Under the socialist and demarchy-like governance by the Tayan League, Kinyen, the Gran homeworld and agricultural planet, had very few people out of work, and a robust gross domestic product. Scarcely anyone lived in poverty, and the planet's overall metrics for health and contentment were some of the best in the galaxy.

The government of Kinyen was the only entity authorized to assign contracts in the partially privatized shipping sector. Saeduree River Shipping alone possessed the right to ship food exports throughout much of the continent where the Kinyen city of Capra stood. The majority of other commercial areas were state-owned, including construction and food production. The government set specific yearly targets for food production, meaning that families and farmhands from the Ayanee Farming Cluster needed to collaborate to produce silvergrass.

What Went On

Milestones

The term "socialism" initially appeared in a message to readers in Trade Federation Basic. This message was part of the non-canon comic called "Force Fiction," which was released by Dark Horse Comics in the seventh installment of the Star Wars Tales comic series from 1999, specifically on March 7, 2001. The message, found on a restaurant menu, credited the comic's creators, Kevin Rubio (author) and Lucas Marangon (artist), as well as Karl Marx, the socialist thinker who pioneered Marxism, the real-world socio-economic concept that deals with socialism and communism.

The idea of socialism as a form of government within the Star Wars universe was first established in the 2015 sourcebook Strongholds of Resistance. This book served as an expansion for the Star Wars: Age of Rebellion roleplaying game created by Fantasy Flight Games. George Lucas drew inspiration from the communist Viet Cong and their war against the United States when creating Star Wars, particularly the Rebel Alliance and the Ewoks who fought the Galactic Empire.

An Interview from the Inside

Socialism was discussed in a non-canon Star Wars Insider article.

Kevin Rubio's article "Insider Interview: Lama Su," published in the sixty-seventh edition of Star Wars Insider magazine on April 15, 2003, features an interview conducted by Rubio with a clone trooper, specifically CT-282-SD00001-983725138. Rubio inquires about the trooper's experiences as one of many clones. The trooper responds that it is reassuring to know everyone has the same capabilities. When Rubio asks if this is similar to communism, the clone corrects him, saying it is more akin to socialism.

However, the clone clarifies that the comparison is inaccurate, suggesting that it is more like militarism instead. Later, a clone of Kevin Rubio arrives with Lama Su, the Prime Minister of Kamino. This clone questions Rubio's failure to mention his theory about hive mentality or the debate between Marxism and socialism, and he accuses Rubio of being an idiot for confusing socialism and communism.
