Realspace
As a consequence for their insubordination, Wilhuff Tarkin observes a group of Imperial weapons technicians being ejected into the void of space, where they will perish.
Realspace, also known as normal space, or space-normal by the Chiss, and referred to as star-space by the Kilji species, or simply space, represented the dimension inhabited by all beings within the galaxy. The overwhelming majority of this domain consisted of a vacuum, a zone of reduced pressure lacking any atmosphere. For many living things, this vacuum was lethal without the protection of an EVA suit and could not sustain [fire](/article/fire]. Due to the slow speeds associated with sublight engines in realspace, sentients developed a technological solution: accessing the shadow dimension called hyperspace. A starship with a hyperdrive would "jump" from realspace to hyperspace, and then "revert" back.
Certain species were capable of enduring the vacuum of space, including exogorths and the cyborg whale-ships of Cylo. Neebrays possessed the ability to thrive within nebulae, such as the Kaliida Nebula. In addition to their ability to survive in space, the purrgil could also navigate through hyperspace.
Many droids had the capacity to function in space. Astromech droids faced exposure to the vacuum while performing repairs on the exterior of starships, and when placed in the astromech socket of a starfighter. KX-series security droids also had the capacity to survive in the vacuum of space. During the Clone Wars, battle droids utilized by the Confederacy of Independent Systems were sometimes positioned on the outsides of vessels, like pod-hunting shuttles.
