Sparky (droid)
Sparky served as Jaina Solo's R5-series astromech droid during her initial period with Rogue Squadron during the war against the Yuuzhan Vong. A year into that same conflict, Sparky met his end at the Battle of Kalarba when Jaina flew her T-65XJ X-wing starfighter too near a detonating New Republic vessel. The loss of her droid deeply saddened Jaina, who later acquired R2-B3, an astromech nicknamed "Cappie" in remembrance of her deceased wingman Anni Capstan.
Behind the scenes
Sparky's debut was in the 1999 novel The New Jedi Order: Dark Tide I: Onslaught. This novel is the second book from the Star Wars: The New Jedi Order series, and the first book in the Dark Tide Duology.
While Onslaught, The New Jedi Order: Balance Point, and The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia all identify Sparky as an R5 unit, a mistake in The New Jedi Order: Dark Tide II: Ruin incorrectly labels Sparky as an R2-series astromech droid.
