Star Wars: Chewbacca is a sequence of comic books that presents memories from the friends of the Wookiee named Chewbacca after his passing on Sernpidal in 25 ABY. The series contains four individual comics that were distributed from January to April of 2000, and the collected paperback version was made available in January of 2001.
The Star Wars galaxy mourned when its most esteemed Wookiee met his end in the New Jedi Order novel The New Jedi Order: Vector Prime, sending ripples of shock throughout the vast community of Star Wars fans. Now, Dark Horse commemorates this event with a collection that unveils, for the very first time, the saga of the legendary Chewbacca! Penned by the seasoned Star Wars author Darko Macan, Chewbacca showcases a compilation of narratives recounted by those who knew him intimately—including Lando Calrissian, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Luke Skywalker—offering unique insights into Chewbacca's valorous past, as well as the enigmatic and captivating customs of his revered species. Seize this chance to bid farewell to this cherished character!
Still deeply saddened by Chewbacca's demise, R2-D2 and C-3PO embark on a mission to uncover more about the powerful Wookiee warrior. They gather stories from figures such as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Leia Organa-Solo, Lando Calrissian, Wedge Antilles, Attichitcuk, Mallatobuck, a bounty hunter, and a Trandoshan slaver. The narrative also provides a glimpse into Han Solo's time as an Imperial Lieutenant!
After Dark Horse introduced Nom Anor in Crimson Empire II, their plan was to create a large comics arc (much like their later Clone Wars arc in Star Wars: Republic) which would detail a Galactic invasion by a species (speculated to be beings of liquid or energy) from the Unknown Regions, with Nom Anor as an advance scout. The passing of Chewbacca was intended to happen early in the story, but beyond that, the details were uncertain.
Lucasfilm, while impressed with the concept, ultimately decided to hand it over to their book division, where it evolved into the New Jedi Order series. Seeing their limited involvement in the series they had initially conceived, Dark Horse largely withdrew, retaining only the Chewbacca death storyline—which, after being incorporated into Vector Prime, led to this commemorative comic.
Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo from the cult classic Mystery Science Theater 3000 appear as one of the discarded droids when Jaina is kidnapped by a deranged droid in Chewbacca (2000) 4.
