Darko Macan


Darko Macan, a Croatian creator born in 1966, is known as both an author and illustrator. His works include creating and collaborating on various projects, such as comic books, essays, and works of science fiction and fantasy. In addition to his creative endeavors, he also works as an editor.

He was born in Zagreb, where he continues to reside. He holds a degree in both history and archaeology from the esteemed University of Zagreb.

Macan has both written and drawn numerous comic books, primarily in Croatian. However, in 1993, he entered the American comics scene by submitting his work, along with fellow Croatian artist Edvin Biuković, to Dark Horse Comics. He has also contributed to Disney comics, working on Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse. He received two nominations for the prestigious Eisner Award for his work on Grendel Tales: Devils and Deaths and Prayer to Sun.

As an author, he has successfully sold over forty short stories in the genres of science fiction and fantasy, along with two science fiction novels and three books intended for children. His accomplishments have been recognized with four SFera Awards and two Grigor Vitez Awards.

Under the alias Cecile Quintal, he has penned essays that explore the world of comics.

He served as the editor for nine editions of the Annual Collections of Croatian SF. Currently, he holds the position of editor-in-chief at the "Q strip" comics magazine.

For Dark Horse Comics, he authored titles such as Star Wars: Chewbacca, Star Wars: Jedi vs. Sith, and Star Wars: Vader's Quest. Additionally, he worked on "Lady Luck" and Star Wars: X-Wing Rogue Squadron: The Phantom Affair in collaboration with his friend and fellow Croatian comic creator, Edvin Biukovic, who provided the artwork.
