Plot summary

Within the confines of Cloud City, Lando Calrissian emerges victorious in a sabacc game against Barpotomous Drebble, amassing over 25,000 credits. Upon exiting the casino, he witnesses an alien fleeing the scene, having seemingly accosted a woman and stolen her pendant. Reacting swiftly, Lando hurls a knife, disabling the door's control panel and preventing the alien's escape. The alien then tosses the pendant to his Toydarian accomplice, Zlato, but Lando deftly uses his cape to ensnare Zlato and retrieve the pendant. As law enforcement arrives to apprehend the criminals, the woman expresses her gratitude to Lando. Lando then recalls that she was seated next to Drebble during his sabacc game, and he noticed that his luck improved significantly when she was there.

Lobot approaches Lando, informing him that the Baron Administrator, Dominic Raynor, has issued a challenge to a sabacc match. Lando accepts and proceeds to Raynor's location, where he finds the Baron accompanied by the woman, whom he identifies as Ymile. As the game progresses, Lando, after achieving a pure sabacc hand, wagers his ship, the Cobra. Raynor counters by revealing an Idiot's Array, the highest-ranking hand in sabacc, thereby winning the Cobra from a dismayed Lando. Lobot then reveals to Lando that a skifter has been employed to manipulate the game. Dominic, of course, denies any involvement, but Lobot exposes the dealer's use of such a device.

The dealer implicates Drebble as the one who paid him to cheat, leading Raynor to have Drebble imprisoned. Lando inquires about the fate of the game's winnings, to which Raynor responds that he should not have to give up the winnings because someone else cheated. Suddenly, Lobot presents Lando with an anonymous gift of five million credits, from someone who desires to see the game continue. Raynor witnesses this and immediately demands a rematch. Thus, Lando and Dominic resume their game, with Lando wagering 4 million credits and his starship lot on Nar Shaddaa against Raynor's position as Baron Administrator. Dominic initially dismisses the bet, but Lando informs him that the lot contains three pre-Empire Surronian Farstars, which have become highly sought-after collector's items under the Empire, prompting Raynor to accept the wager. Lando reveals that he has a pure sabacc, causing Baron Raynor to summon the guards in anger, but they disregard his commands. Lando Calrissian has now become the new Baron Administrator of Cloud City.

Lobot later discloses to Lando that Ymile's pendant was, in fact, a skifter, and that, combined with Lobot's access to the Cloud City computer systems, it enabled Lando to receive the appropriate cards at the opportune moments. Furthermore, the funds originated from the collective contributions of fifty thousand Ugnaught workers on Bespin, who resented Raynor's governance of the city. Lando then approaches a balcony and dramatically casts Ymile's pendant over the edge.

Continuity

This narrative provides the backstory for Lando's ownership of a ship named Lady Luck in later years. It may also be the incident referenced by Barpotomous Drebble in the Marvel Star Wars comic book series when he accuses Lando of cheating him.

In the third panel on the comic's second page, a cameo appearance is made by Mike Mignola's Hellboy as a background character.

Legacy

Unlike other tales within the ambiguously canonical Star Wars Tales series, the events depicted in this story have been canonized through their inclusion in sources such as The New Essential Chronology, Star Wars: The Ultimate Visual Guide, and the short story Lando Calrissian: Idiot's Array.
