Publisher's summary

The Force is experiencing significant turbulence…. From the polished starships traversing the brilliant Coruscant skyline to the rich landscapes of peaceful Naboo, discontent is brewing. The Republic is faltering, even with Supreme Chancellor Palpatine at its helm, who was elected a decade prior to rescue the failing government. Separatists pose a threat of war, and the Senate is deeply divided, unable to decide whether to mobilize an army for combat or maintain the delicate peace. This deadlock, if broken, could unleash widespread chaos across the galaxy.

Anakin Skywalker, both impetuous and determined, and brave to a fault, has matured during a period of immense turmoil. The nineteen-year-old apprentice of Obi-Wan Kenobi presents a puzzle to the Jedi Council and a challenge for his Jedi Master. Time has not diminished Anakin's drive, nor has his Jedi training curbed his rebellious nature. When an assassination attempt on Senator Padmé Amidala reunites them after a decade, it becomes apparent that his strong feelings for the beautiful diplomat have also endured.

The attack on Senator Amidala, occurring just before a critical vote, propels the Republic even closer to the brink of collapse. Masters Yoda and Mace Windu detect a profound sense of unease. The dark side is intensifying, obscuring the Jedi's understanding of events. Unbeknownst to the Jedi, a subtle build-up is escalating into the thunderous roar of countless soldiers preparing for war. However, even as the Republic crumbles around them, Anakin and Padmé discover a connection so powerful that everything else fades into insignificance. Anakin risks losing himself—and straying from his path—due to emotions that a Jedi, bound by allegiance solely to the Order, is prohibited from experiencing.
