Star Wars: Princess Leia

The Star Wars comic series titled Star Wars: Princess Leia is a miniseries. Mark Waid is the writer, while Terry Dodson provided the pencils. Marvel Comics published this five-part series from March to July of 2015. The story is focused on Leia Organa and takes place between the events depicted in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope and those in Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. The narrative explores Leia's reaction to the destruction of her homeworld, Alderaan, and her efforts to locate surviving Alderaanians scattered throughout the galaxy.

Development

Axel Alonso, the editor-in-chief at Marvel, stated that the company's dedication to diversity was the reason they decided to create a Leia miniseries. Jordan D. White, an editor, proposed the series to Waid because Waid had expressed interest in writing a story featuring a female protagonist.

Waid expressed his admiration for the character of Princess Leia, noting that, despite initially appearing as a damsel in distress, she defied that trope and proved to be more competent in combat than the male heroes. He remarked, "That was so unique at the time, and sadly, it's still a little unique." He stated that even if he hadn't been offered the project, writing a Star Wars comic about her would have been his top choice.

He chose to delve into Leia's emotions regarding the destruction of Alderaan because he believed that "a character is really defined by how they react in the lowest moment of their life." He determined that she would maintain a sense of responsibility towards her people, a sentiment that other members of the Rebellion might not share. He made the decision to limit the involvement of other major characters from the films to ensure that Leia remained the central figure in her own story.

Dodson explained that he aimed to create a "working likeness" of Leia that would be recognizable to readers, while avoiding strict adherence to photographic references of Carrie Fisher. He also acknowledged Leia's diverse range of outfits in the films, describing it as "a great tradition" that he would strive to continue when designing new costumes for her in the series.
