Star Wars Adventures: Tales from Vader's Castle #3 represents the third installment in the comic book miniseries titled Star Wars Adventures: Tales from Vader's Castle. Cavan Scott took on the writing duties for this comic, while Derek Charm and Corin Howell provided the illustrations. IDW Publishing released it on October 17, 2018.
Initially, the setting for Star Wars Adventures: Tales from Vader's Castle was intended to be around the same timeframe as the 2015 movie Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens. Consequently, the original story revolved around Poe Dameron. However, plans shifted, placing the story in the same era as the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which led to Dameron's replacement with Han Solo.
Cavan Scott had initially envisioned a story focused on the Nightsisters for this issue. However, due to the story's position in the timeline making that impossible, he decided to feature Han Solo and Chewbacca as the main characters. Disney's 2013 animated film Frozen, a favorite of Scott's daughters, served as one of the sources of inspiration for the story.
In the comic, Han Solo mentions that Chewbacca is 192 years of age, which places the story around 8 BBY. On the other hand, the comic also alludes to Solo and Chewbacca's mission to Ushruu from The Mighty Chewbacca in the Forest of Fear!, which included the Alliance to Restore the Republic. Considering that the Rebel Alliance hadn't been established by 8 BBY, the "192 years old" statement is likely inaccurate.
Matt Martin of the Lucasfilm Story Group responded to a fan inquiry, suggesting that regarding the Ushruu mission reference, it's plausible that Han and Chewie undertook multiple missions there. Moreover, Han's statement about Chewie's age might not be precise, even stating that Han isn't even sure of his own age.
