During the hostilities between the First Order and the Resistance, the First Order relocated the planet Ilum, which had been transformed into the mobile Starkiller Base, to a star system located within the Unknown Regions. This action was taken so they could harness the energy of the system's star as a source of power. To gather the necessary dark energy to operate its superweapon, the planet employed a thermal oscillator to channel the star's energy. This process gradually diminished the star's luminosity until it ceased to shine altogether. Nevertheless, the destruction of Starkiller Base resulted in the release of the star's stored energy, leading to the creation of a new star in the location of the planet, effectively transforming the system into a binary star system.
