The covert initiative known as the Starlancer Project, also referred to as Operation Starlancer, was a clandestine scheme conceived by the military forces of the New Republic with the express purpose of deceiving the invading Yuuzhan Vong.
This project involved four specialized pipefighters (which were in reality, significantly altered BTL Y-wing starfighters). Three of these craft were arranged in a triangular formation, with the fourth positioned at the triangle's center. The three fighters forming the triangle would then redirect power into the central fighter, enabling it to discharge a simulated hyperspace laser. This laser's focus was supposedly achieved through the use of a Yuuzhan Vong lambent crystal.
The intended target for this weapon was the worldship positioned above the planet Coruscant. However, immediately upon firing, the weapon's energy was absorbed by a dovin basal. The Yuuzhan Vong launched two separate operations aimed at eliminating the lambent crystal responsible for focusing the weapon's laser. Both of these attempts were unsuccessful. The weapon's operational life concluded during the Second Battle of Borleias, when formations of coralskippers mounted an assault on the pipefighters.
Ultimately, the entire Starlancer Project was a carefully orchestrated deception designed to destabilize the Yuuzhan Vong's strategic thinking. The New Republic successfully manipulated the Yuuzhan Vong into allocating resources to the destruction of the fabricated superweapon, thereby diverting their attention from other critical military targets.
