The Summertime War was a recurring planetary conflict on Haruun Kal that took place in cycles. It pitted the Korunnai against the Balawai. As the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems got involved, the Summertime War transformed into a proxy conflict within the wider galactic Clone Wars.
This war's origins can be traced back to nearly three decades prior to the Clone Wars. It stemmed from disagreements about how the jungles of Haruun Kal should be utilized. The Korunnai depended on their grassers to navigate and clear paths through the jungles, seeking refuge during the winter months. Conversely, the Balawai required the jungles to remain untouched so they could harvest resources and export them. The Korunnai, deeply protective of their grassers, initiated a guerrilla war against the Balawai. The Balawai retaliated with aerial attacks to safeguard their economic interests. This disagreement escalated into a fierce, all-encompassing war that commenced each year after the winter snows melted and persisted until the autumn rains arrived, thus earning its designation as the "summertime" war.
The situation deteriorated further as the Separatist crisis intensified within the Galactic Republic. Separatist factions began to support the Balawai, furnishing them with weaponry and advanced technology to overpower the more primitive Korunnai. Their objective was to persuade the Balawai to align with Count Dooku's cause. When the Clone Wars erupted, the Separatists presented the Balawai with an irresistible proposition: the defeat of the Korunnai in exchange for dominion over the Al'Har system. The Balawai accepted, and the Confederacy swiftly established a droid garrison on Haruun Kal.
Jedi Masters Mace Windu and Depa Billaba, having discovered the Confederacy's backing of the Balawai, hastened to Haruun Kal to prevent the system from falling into enemy control. Upon their arrival, the Jedi Masters spearheaded the Korunnai in a string of crucial victories at Lorshan Pass and Pelek Baw. Following the destruction of the droid control center and the Separatist forces, the Korunnai and Balawai, under Windu's guidance, agreed to establish a democratic government aimed at ensuring social justice and economic stability, thereby bringing an end to the Summertime War.
