The T-4 model served as a land-based transportation vehicle employed by the Imperial armed forces.
It featured an uncovered driver's compartment, a windshield to shield the operator, and minimal armor plating on its sides. Propulsion was achieved via four repulsorlifts; when operational, these generated a distinctive drone comprised of the layered sounds of the power generators. With a load capacity of five tons, it was commonly used for transporting both supplies and soldiers. When unburdened, it could achieve speeds of eighty kilometers per hour.
Like most Imperial military vehicles, all T-4s incorporated a keypad-based locking system requiring a four-digit access code; the default factory code was 0000. The dashboard instrumentation included a keypad for code entry, along with four on/off switches for engine management and an ignition button. Auxiliary controls were available for a co-pilot. It incorporated standard buttons, switches, and pedals found in other vehicles throughout the galaxy, similar to harvesters. It also had side-mounted mirrors to provide rear visibility.
Certain models deployed by the Empire had a dual-barreled energy cannon mounted at the rear, situated within a lightly armored enclosure behind the driver's compartment. The turret included a seat for the gunner, handlebar-style controls with firing triggers positioned for thumb activation, and aiming sights. A safety switch and a "live fire" selector were also present.
Trainees at the Imperial Academy received certification in T-4 operation during their second year of training, including familiarization with the default security code needed to activate the vehicle. Most unit leaders opted to maintain this default setting, finding it simpler than requiring all personnel to memorize a new access code.
During the year 5 ABY, a T-4 was stationed at the vehicle depot near the Katarn estate on the moon of Sulon, while Jerec's Imperial forces had secured the surrounding area. This particular vehicle was positioned directly above a maintenance access point for the farm's irrigation network, from which Kyle Katarn and WeeGee emerged in an attempt to evade the Imperial troops and Grave Tusken soldiers of fortune. Kyle activated the vehicle, and they attempted to escape the area and reach Baron's Hed. A chase ensued involving Speeder bikes, and Katarn utilized the turret to defend against the Tusken bike gang. Bordo and other Tuskens managed to board the T-4 just before it was destroyed upon colliding with an Imperial roadblock; the resulting explosion eliminated the Tuskens, a squad of Stormtroopers, dislodged an AT-ST from the bridge, and created a wall of fire, into which Tuskens moving too quickly were incinerated. However, the Moldy Crow successfully rescued Kyle and his droid in time.
During the year 10 ABY, a T-4 was present at the Katraasii Spaceport. In her pursuit of Abron Mar, Mara Jade found her path obstructed by a bulkhead door within a small speeder bay where Mar was concealed, and she used the T-4 to force her way through.
