Grenade droid

Grenade droids, which are also referred to as grenadier droids or B1 grenadier troopers, represented a grenadier type of the B1-series battle droid. They were deployed by both the Trade Federation and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. The thermal detonator battle droid and B1 Grenadier Assault were among the different forms.

Description

A thermal detonator battle droid.

Similar to the B1 battle droids, Grenade droids, also known as B1 grenadier troopers, possessed a bipedal structure, featuring two arms and two legs. They were equipped with black sensors and distinguished by green markings that identified their specific model. Their method of operation involved launching grenades towards designated targets. Thermal detonator battle droids were armed with mortars that launched thermal detonators, serving in a light anti-armor capacity. These units proved effective against mechanical and shielded targets, but their effectiveness diminished when used against buildings or non-mechanical targets. Droid grenadiers would carry their mortars while moving and then deploy them when stationary.

History

A B1 grenade droid on Umbara

During the Invasion of Naboo in 32 BBY, measured in years, Grenade droids saw action. Grenadier droids were positioned throughout the city of Theed and were engaged by Jedi Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi. As the invasion neared its conclusion, a larger number of these droids attempted to impede Kenobi from destroying a quad turbolaser cannon. A single thermal detonator battle droid participated in the initial phases of the invasion. An additional ten accompanied the OOM command battle droid OOM-9 during the attack on the city of Spinnaker.

OOM-9 issued orders for the construction of more at Trade Federation Troop centers.

Following the destruction of the Vuutun Palaa, all units within the Trade Federation Droid Army on Naboo were deactivated. Subsequently, B1 grenadier droids were integrated into the forces of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, participating in battles such as the Battle of Umbara and the third battle of Felucia. The B1 Grenadier Assault was an enhanced version of this droid.

Behind the scenes

Grenade droids are featured in the video game Star Wars: Obi-Wan released in 2001. The thermal detonator battle droid is present in the video game Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds from 2001 and its expansion pack released in 2002. In two missions, the player (assuming the role of OOM-9) received these droids, and the player could produce more in single- or multiplayer modes.
