TYE-wing

The TYE-wing belonged to a group of hybrid starfighter designs, often referred to as "uglies."

It went by several different designations, such as TIE-wing, T-wing, Y-ball, TIE-Y, TYE fighter, Die-wing, Why-Fighter, or just TYE, but it seemed to have a more consistent design than most other uglies.

TYE-wings merged the spherical cockpit and wing supports of the TIE Fighter with the engine pods taken from the Y-wing. These craft were equipped with a pair of TIE fighter laser cannons, generally included a working TIE sensor array, and possessed adequate maneuverability. However, they lacked both shields and a hyperdrive, and despite being faster than some other uglies, their speed was quite poor when compared to most standard production fighters.

In essence, the TYE-wing took on the worst aspects of both the TIE fighter and the Y-wing, while failing to capture the strengths of either. Due to the combination of the TIE's weak firepower and vulnerability with the Y-Wing's slow speed and awkwardness, many pilots sarcastically called them "DIE-wings," reflecting their almost nonexistent combat effectiveness and survivability.

TYE-wings were frequently encountered in the hands of pirates, notably within Kavil's Corsairs and other groups flying under the Blazing Claw banner. They also saw use in various private defense forces, by elements of the Imperial Remnant and among Rebel privateers. For instance, Urias Xhaxin had several TYE-wings, along with other Uglies, aboard his vessel, the Free Lance, during the Yuuzhan Vong War.
