An umbrella served as a protective device against both rain and sunlight. During the era of the High Republic Era, Jinx Pickwick utilized an umbrella to find shelter from the intense rainfall on the planet of Dalna. Later, during the same era, Avon Starros' astromech droid, known as J-6, was equipped with an umbrella based on force field technology; she deployed this to safeguard Avon and her newly acquired friend, Honesty Weft, from the corrosive effects of acid rain after they found themselves marooned on the moon called Wevo. The streets of Black Spire Outpost on Batuu were often filled with umbrellas, especially to give shade to visitors from other worlds unaccustomed to the strong heat. There were also specialized umbrellas that could function as floating parachutes.
