Unidentified Shawkenese guard

This Shawkenese Guard was a native inhabitant of Shawken, a planet. His duty was to stand watch at the entrance to a dig site on his home world, but he abandoned his post after an encounter with Dani, a Zeltron. Consequently, he found himself outside the ruins when Kiro, an Iskalonian, and Chihdo, a Rodian, inadvertently triggered the Shawken Device. He managed to inform Santor, the planet's de facto leader, about what had transpired. The guard then accompanied a small team back to deactivate the device. The group ventured into the catacombs, where the guard ultimately witnessed the device's destruction when Luke Skywalker, a Jedi Knight, and Kiro managed to disable it.

Biography

Not long after the Battle of Endor, his home planet received diplomats representing the Rebel Alliance. Santor, Shawken's unofficial leader, instructed his people to ensure the comfort of the off-world visitors, and the populace endeavored to fulfill Santor's request. The guard was tasked with protecting the entrance to a series of ruins on the planet. The Galactic Empire had recently excavated these ruins, but following the Battle of Endor, the Empire withdrew from the planet, leaving the area deserted and vulnerable to looting. As a result, the guard was vigilant for anyone attempting to pilfer artifacts from the excavation site.

Upon the arrival of the Rebel diplomats, they were joined by Rik Duel and his companions, Chihdo and Dani. This trio consisted of petty thieves who hoped to steal some of Shawken's treasures while on the planet. Unaware of the group's criminal background, Santor welcomed them to explore the catacombs, and Rik, Dani, and Chihdo proceeded to the site. The guard greeted the three, offering them several lanterns to navigate the dark corridors of the excavation site. However, Dani, the Zeltron, began to flirt aggressively with the guard. Finding himself quite uncomfortable with her advances, he abandoned his post, allowing the trio to act as they pleased.

However, shortly thereafter, another individual arrived at the excavation site. Kiro, the Iskalonian, determined to prevent Rik and his gang from robbing the catacombs, quickly entered the site. The guard observed this and decided to follow Kiro into the ruins. Before he could catch up, he heard blaster fire echoing from within, followed by the slamming shut of massive metal doors, trapping the four individuals who had entered the ruins before him. The entire cavern began to throb with energy, prompting the guard to rush back to the city to inform Santor of what had occurred. The guard arrived at Santor's residence, where the planetary leader was engaged in a diplomatic discussion with Luke Skywalker, the Jedi Knight. After hearing the guard's report, Santor decided to personally investigate the catacombs.

A small party, including the guard, Santor, Luke Skywalker, his friend Plif, and another planetary leader, Margan, traveled to the ruins. However, they were met with blaster fire. An ancient weapon had been activated, and its defense system attempted to prevent the group from entering. Skywalker managed to destroy the defense system, and the group descended into the excavation site. They were able to rescue the four who had been trapped, as Plif dispelled the energy sealing the doors. Skywalker and Kiro then separated from the group and ventured deeper towards the planet's core to destroy the device. They succeeded and eventually rejoined the group on the surface.

Behind the scenes

This Shawkenese guard's name is not mentioned in the Marvel Star Wars comic, Star Wars 87. When the guard arrives at Santor's home to alert him about the Shawken Device's activation, he seems to experience a temporary lapse in judgment. He tells Santor that three people entered the ruins, but then states that a "third" followed instead of a "fourth." Given that the guard rejects the advances of a Zeltron female earlier in the comic, it remains unclear whether the author, Jo Duffy, intended to portray the man's idiocy or if this was simply a dialogue error.
