A proposed TV spin-off, with a group of Younglings as the main characters, was initially envisioned while the fifth season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars was being made. Nevertheless, it was terminated while the season was still being produced.
The writers suggested a possible TV spin-off show starring young Padawans in leading roles as Star Wars: The Clone Wars' fifth season was being developed. A pilot episode was created, but ultimately, the project was abandoned, and the writers chose to incorporate some concepts from the canceled show into the Younglings story arc of the fifth season. This arc consisted of the episodes "The Gathering," "A Test of Strength," "Bound for Rescue" and "A Necessary Bond."
Pablo Hidalgo disclosed through Cinemablend in November 2016, a month prior to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story's release, that the intended spin-off was the final Star Wars project that George Lucas contributed to before he sold Lucasfilm Ltd. to The Walt Disney Company in 2012.
