Uroth

The Uroths were a species of sizable, sentient two-legged cephalopods. They dwelled on the planet Wizar II, where they lived a simple existence, cut off from much of the galaxy. Their traditional religious beliefs involved several deities and a yearning to pass into the afterlife without fearing death.

During the Galactic Civil War, the Uroths came across a peculiar entity capable of killing any Uroth that got close. Though it was actually a highly advanced StelProbe V Droid, they mistook it for their death god incarnate, viewing its presence as a sign of their world's impending doom. They pursued and eventually captured the droid. However, a group of strange beings—actually spacers hired by the droid's owner to retrieve it—snatched their "god" and fled into space.

Biology and appearance

The Uroths were a species of large, squid-like sentient cephalopods. They moved around on two legs.

Society and culture

The Uroths originated from Wizar II, a planet situated in the Wizar system of Wild Space, largely unknown across the galaxy. The species' technological level was quite basic. Nonetheless, Uroths were adept trackers, capable of following even a sophisticated probe droid across their lands.

This species practiced a native religion that included numerous deities. The concept of death was central to their beliefs, but the promise of an afterlife meant death was something to be welcomed, not feared. Indeed, some Uroths were so zealous that they became suicidal. The god of death held a prominent place in their pantheon. They believed that the return of this deity would herald the end of the world. The Uroths fiercely guarded their culture and resisted any attempts to interfere with their religion.

History

The Uroths evolved on Wizar II. They developed their own religion and a rudimentary society there. Until the Galactic Civil War, their planet and species remained largely unknown to the wider galaxy. One day, the Uroths encountered a strange being. When this being caused the demise of Uroths who dared approach, the species interpreted it as an avatar of their death god. The deity's appearance on their world could signify only one thing: the end was near.

What the Uroths didn't realize was that this "avatar" was actually a StelProbe V Droid dispatched to Wizar II by an exploration company called the Karflo Corporation. It had crash-landed on Wizar II, suffering damage to its computer systems. Consequently, its exploration and defense routines remained functional, but its instructions to transmit findings back to Karflo were corrupted. Karflo took notice; the droid was a cutting-edge model worth millions of credits. The company offered 10,000 credits to anyone who could recover the droid.

The Uroths began to pursue their "god" as it moved through their territory. This hunt became their primary focus. Some Uroths even asked the "god" to kill them, which it did when they ventured too close. The Uroths didn't mind; since the world was ending, they saw the end of their lives as the beginning of their afterlife. Eventually, the Uroths succeeded in capturing the incarnate deity.

Later, more strange beings arrived on Wizar II. While they were actually spacers hired by Karflo to retrieve the droid, the Uroths only perceived them as attempting to seize the god of death for themselves, which the Uroths tried to prevent. Despite their efforts, the strangers managed to take the "avatar" and escape into space.

More than a century later, Wizar II and its surrounding region had become more integrated into the galaxy. The Uroth's world was incorporated into Darth Krayt's Galactic Empire by 127 ABY.

Behind the scenes

The Uroths are featured in "Droid Hunt," an adventure seed for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, Second Edition by Bill Olmesdahl. The plot is presented as an example of a quest-based adventure.

In the standard version of the adventure, the players take on the roles of a small group of spacers who journey to Wizar II, confront the Uroths, and recover the droid. Olmesdahl suggests variations on the plot. In one, the player characters are agents of the Alliance to Restore the Republic sent to Wizar II to retrieve the StelProbe V for reprogramming and analysis. Another idea proposes that the droid's reactor might be damaged and on the verge of overloading, potentially destroying much of the Uroth civilization. A final variation introduces other droid hunters, giving the player characters additional opponents to contend with.
