Vaenrood, a planet, existed within the Vaenrood system. This system was situated in the Pakuuni sector, a region of the Outer Rim Territories. The New Republic and the Galactic Empire engaged in combat on Vaenrood some months prior to the liberation of Kal'Shebbol, the capital of the Kathol sector.
Within the Outer Rim Territories, the Pakuuni sector contained the system that shared its name with the planet Vaenrood. A portion of the planet's surface was characterized by mountainous terrain.
During the era of the Galactic Civil War, the New Republic fought against Imperial forces on Vaenrood. This occurred several months before their campaign aimed at ousting Moff Kentor Sarne, a warlord, from his capital on Kal'Shebbol, a planet within the Kathol sector. T-65 X-wing starfighters and New Republic ground forces were deployed to the planet, with one of the X-wings being piloted by Lieutenant Darryn Thyte.
In the course of the battle, New Republic ground troops, supported by X-wing air cover, clashed with Imperial units that had artillery support in a mountainous region. As the battle progressed, artillery fire struck Lieutenant Thyte's X-wing, causing the starfighter to crash. While Thyte survived the crash, the canopy of his X-wing fractured and broke, severing the majority of his right arm above the elbow. Medics replaced the limb with a cumbersome cybernetic replacement, the best available technology at that time. Following the incident, Thyte was barred from further active flight assignments.
The short story "The Saga Begins" by Timothy Zahn, which was included in The DarkStryder Campaign by West End Games in 1995, was the first mention of Vaenrood. Lieutenant Darren Thyte's character biography provides additional details about Vaenrood.
