Volice worm
The volice worm, sometimes simply called the volice, was an extraordinary, large worm species that once inhabited the jungle-filled and volcanically active world of Lwhekk, situated within the Unknown Regions. These creatures consumed rocks that contained crystalline materials; these materials could be utilized as focusing elements in the lightsaber weapons wielded by the Jedi, who were Force-sensitives. As a result, every eleven years, the volice worm would expel a distinctive, translucent, crystallized substance known as sapith.
The volice worm had become extinct at some point well before 3956 BBY and many millennia prior to the Battle of Yavin, with some of their remains eventually becoming fossils. Over time, individuals would unearth these fossilized volice worm remains to retrieve the increasingly scarce sapith crystals. Ancient Jedi Knights used these crystals as focusing components for their lightsabers, and they were available in the galaxy by 3956 BBY.
Behind the scenes

The 2003 video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, developed by BioWare, was the first to mention the volice worm. The creature's name was capitalized as "Volice worm" in the game itself, its 2004 sequel Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords by Obsidian Entertainment, and the accompanying game guide from Prima Games. However, later sources have used a lowercase version of the name instead, which this article assumes is the correct form. Furthermore, The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia from 2008 introduced a shortened name for the volice worm, and one entry in the book incorrectly stated that the worm excreted the sapith crystals every ten years, rather than every eleven years.
