Behind the scenes

Within the pages of Star Wars Galaxy Magazine 3 (1995), the "Design An Alien" contest was revealed, prompting fans to conceive Star Wars aliens drawing inspiration from the original trilogy of movies. Mark Rehkopf, aged 29, crafted the Ubese Thorn-Back War Dragon alongside its rider, submitting his creation to the magazine for consideration in the contest. Rehkopf's submission emerged victorious in the "16 years and up" category, resulting in the publication of his description and original illustration in Star Wars Galaxy Magazine 7 (1996). Leland Chee, the continuity editor at Lucasfilm, later confirmed that the "Design an Alien" content holds a place in canon. Despite this, the War Dragon rider remains unmentioned in other Star Wars media.
