Westen held a position as an officer within the Imperial Navy. Shortly following the Battle of Yavin, he attained the rank of captain.
In the year 0 ABY, Westen assumed command of the Star Destroyer known as the Relentless. This occurred after the previous captain, Parlan, failed to accomplish a mission given to him by Darth Vader. Parlan's assignment was to capture the Republican tactician Adar Tallon, who was in hiding on Tatooine. Nevertheless, Tallon escaped from Parlan's operative and joined the Rebel Alliance. Darth Vader, as a consequence of this failure, strangled Parlan. Westen was aware of Parlan's fate, and feared suffering a similar one. This motivated him to strive to avoid disappointing figures like Vader. He was presented with an opportunity to engage Adar Tallon, the same individual who had eluded his predecessor. While in command of the Relentless, Westen engaged in combat against the new flagship of the Rebel commander, called the Silent Water. Tallon contemplated various strategies for the battle, and one of the things he considered was that Westen was unlike Parlan.
Later, Moff Ravik, who had been captured by Rebels and was being transported to a secure world aboard the starship Celestial, successfully escaped from his holding cell. Working in conjunction with commander Bane Nothos and other prisoners, Ravik orchestrated a mutiny, seizing control of the ship from its original captain, Alain Gryphon. Ravik then transmitted a distress signal to the nearest Imperial base. The Relentless was dispatched to retrieve Ravik, who also possessed the coordinates of the Rebel safe world. However, upon Westen's arrival, the Celestial jumped into hyperspace due to a final effort by Captain Gryphon. Westen, fearing the potential repercussions from the Empire, could not afford to lose Ravik. He deployed an entire squadron of TIE/LN starfighters to the area, with the objective of tracking any potential hyperspace routes that the Celestial might have taken.
While the fighters were conducting their search, a Rebel reinforcement ship, the Long Shot, arrived. The Shot collided with a TIE fighter and subsequently engaged Westen's forces in combat. Realizing her disadvantageous position, the Shot initiated a hyperspace jump, which Westen hoped to exploit to locate their route. However, the hyperdrive on the Shot had sustained damage from the initial collision with the TIE fighter, and the Celestial also possessed a damaged hyperdrive. Consequently, their hyperspace lanes were entirely different and unfamiliar, preventing Westen from tracking them. Westen returned to his base without success. His mission was a failure. Subsequently, Vader executed Westen and replaced him with Dorja as the commander of the Relentless.
