The Wicko District Garbage Pit, located close to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, served as one of countless disposal locations where the planet's waste was launched into the cosmos. As one of over 5,000 such pits on Coruscant (a world generating a trillion tons of waste every hour), it measured two kilometers in width and three kilometers in depth.
Collected waste was transported via conveyor belts to a specialized pod, which was subsequently loaded into a massive, gun-like apparatus. These pods were launched into space along predetermined paths, initially passing through a tractor beam shield to establish their trajectories, and then through an acceleration shield to guide them into orbit above Coruscant. There, specialized garbage vehicles would gather and eliminate the waste. More unstable materials were directly launched into Coruscant Prime. Undesirable materials were deposited at the base of the garbage pit, where worms consumed and excreted them as silicone.
The garbage pit also served as a venue for illicit pit racing. In 29 BBY, during the initial stages of his Jedi training, Anakin Skywalker piloted a hang-glider-like device through the various shields, descending to the pit's bottom. His objective was to retrieve a scale from a worm and present it to the race master to claim his reward, but Obi-Wan Kenobi intervened, rescuing him from an assassination attempt by a Blood Carver named Ke Daiv.
