Wing Tao Chao


Wing Tao Chao, a distinguished Disney architect, significantly contributed to hospitality and construction advancement as an executive. Furthermore, he portrayed Governor Wing in "Chapter 13: The Jedi," an episode from The Mandalorian television series in 2020. In 2024, Chao also lent his voice to Wing in "The Path of Anger," an episode of the Star Wars: Tales of the Empire animated series.

Biography

Born in May of 1944 during wartime, in Chungking, a city within the Republic of China, Wing T. Chao later relocated to the United States. Although he initially considered pursuing medicine to become a physician, he ultimately chose to study architecture at both UC Berkeley and Harvard University. In 1972, Chao began his career with the Walt Disney Company, where he assisted in the master planning of the Lake Buena Vista Communities in Florida. Subsequently, he took charge of planning Epcot Center, a nearby Disney park, along with its surrounding transportation infrastructure, which was inaugurated in 1982. Eventually, Chao ascended to the position of executive vice president at Walt Disney Imagineering and vice chairman of development for Disney Parks and Resorts in the Asia Pacific region. In these roles, he supervised the development of over one hundred projects, including Tokyo Disneyland, hotels, corporate buildings, entertainment venues, cruise ships, and resort renovations. Chao also played an instrumental role in Disney's negotiations with the French and Hong Kong governments for the construction of Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland, which opened in 1992 and 2005, respectively. After retiring from Disney, Chao joined Las Vegas Sands, a casino and resort company, in 2010, and in 2019, he was honored as a Disney Legend.
