Wortin held a significant position as a major within the ranks of the Imperial Navy.
During the year 7 ABY, Wortin held the role of flight coordinator aboard the Interdictor known as the Black Asp. When Ysanne Isard commanded that Bror Jace be captured, Wortin was unable to stop the destruction of Jace's X-wing. The Galactic Empire, not knowing that Jace was feigning his death, believed Wortin's team had killed him. Director Isard was not happy, because she wanted to imprison Jace at the Lusankya facility for brainwashing.
Wortin maintained that the ship's explosion was accidental—a fact unknown to Imperial investigators, but indeed the truth. Kirtan Loor created a comprehensive report detailing Wortin's "incompetence," suggesting that Wortin's failure warranted execution. Isard shared this assessment, but the Empire needed to be more careful with its people. She opted to move Wortin to the Inexorable serving under the leadership of Thrawn.
