The small comic tells the story of a wampa that stumbles upon an unsuspecting Imperial viper probe droid while hunting tauntauns on the ice planet Hoth.
A hungry wampa is stalking a herd of at least five tauntauns grazing on lichen near one of Hoth's frozen lakes. The wampa prepares itself for an attack, and then pounces, trying to capture one of the tauntauns. However, it runs into an Imperial probe droid by accident, and after a brief battle of blasters versus claws, the wampa defeats the probe droid and brings it back to its cave. The droid later finds itself hanging upside-down in the ice cave, above the skeletal remains of the wampa's former prey.
"Hoth" first appeared in Dark Horse Comic's Star Wars Tales 5, released on September 27, 2000. It was later collected in Star Wars Tales Volume 2, which was published on May 1, 2002. The two-page comic was written and penciled by Tony Millionaire as his first foray into the Star Wars Expanded Universe, colored by Michelle Madsen, and edited by Phil Amara.
The way the wampa hangs the probe droid in the cave at the end of the comic is reminiscent of the method with which the wampa imprisons Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back.
Because "Hoth" was published in an issue of Star Wars Tales before issue 21, the canonicity of the story was originally ambiguous. However, the events of "Hoth" were later referenced and expanded in The Official Star Wars Fact File 51 , making the story fully canonical. According to the Fact File, scientists from the University of Sanbra later discovered the probe droid in the wampa's cave and used the recordings from its memory to learn about the behavior of the ice creatures.
