A species of small animals were present on a planet in Wild Space to which the Chiss Mitth'raw'nuruodo was exiled. Thrawn used the animals to sneak explosives past an Imperial encampment's sentry perimeter.
The species was nocturnal and was attracted to pyussh berries that had been fermented and crushed.
The animals were native to a planet in Wild Space. Around 15 BBY, the Imperial Venator-Class Star Destroyer Strikefast arrived at the planet searching for smugglers. The Chiss Mitth'raw'nuruodo, who had been exiled on the planet, destroyed a V-wing starfighter using a carefully placed monofilament line. He then stole the pilots comlink and blaster power packs and stuffed thier flight suit with grass, leaves, and fermented pyussh berries. The berries were taken into the Imperial encampment, where they were crushed for examination. Thrawn strapped the stolen power packs to several of the small animals and set them free near the camp, where they were lured to the berries inside. The animals were able to get the explosive power packs past the camp's sentry perimieter, where they were detonated by Thrawn. He later used this same tactic to attack some stormtroopers inside the camp. When Thrawn was later captured aboard the Strikefast, he explained his tactics to Colonel Mosh Barris and Captain Voss Parck, describring the creatures as "small animals of the night."
The animals were first mentioned in Timothy Zahns novel Thrawn, which was published in 2017 as the first installment in the Star Wars: Thrawn trilogy. They were first pictured in the first issue of Star Wars: Thrawn, a 2018 comic adaptation of the novel illustrated by Luke Ross and published by Marvel Comics.
