In a career spanning over fifty years, Hoyland appeared in a variety of films ranging from Hellboy to Gandhi. One of his most notable roles was as McGregor in the 1981 Bond film For Your Eyes Only alongside John Hollis and fellow Imperial Julian Glover. He also appeared on many television shows, including Call the Midwife and Coronation Street. Like many of his fellow Imperial actors Hoyland was also a prolific stage actor, often playing roles in American plays as well as those edited from the transcripts of trials.
Hoyland passed away from cancer in 2017 at the age of 73.
