Abbaji existed as a planet situated inside the Zuma sector which itself was located within the Outer Rim Territories. Its surface was largely covered by rainforests, notably the Irugian Rain Forest, which served as the only habitat within the galaxy for firethorn trees. A tree of this type was presented as a gift to the notorious criminal Xizor, who led the Black Sun crime organization.
Abbaji was a terrestrial-type planet located in the Abbaji system, which itself was part of the Spar sector, a subsector found within the inner reaches of the Zuma sector, in the distant Outer Rim of the galaxy. The famous firethorn trees, reaching heights of one hundred meters, were unique to this planet, growing exclusively in a single section of the world's Irugian Rain Forest.
The planet's terrain was predominantly rainforest, and its atmosphere was breathable for a majority of species.
At some indeterminate point, Prince Xizor, the leader of the Black Sun criminal syndicate, received a dwarf firethorn tree that was six-hundred years old. This was given as a peace offering from a business rival, and Xizor regarded it as one of his most treasured possessions. During the New Republic period, security on the planet was primarily maintained by the Abbaji System Constables, a local military and police force.
Abbaji was initially referenced in the 1996 novel titled Shadows of the Empire, authored by Steve Perry.
In 2006, a different Abbaji was introduced into Star Wars canon. According to Unknown Soldier: The Story of General Grievous, The Essential Atlas placed it and the planet Kalee in the same system. However, Shadows of the Empire had positioned the original Abbaji near the planet Endor. Consequently, due to this inconsistency, the latter Abbaji near Kalee was unofficially retconned as Abbaji Minor by the author Jason Fry.
