Alphabet Squadron is a canon novel penned by Alexander Freed. This book marks the beginning of the Star Wars: Alphabet Squadron series. Del Rey released it to the public on June 11, 2019. Taking place after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, Alphabet Squadron centers its narrative on a group of New Republic pilots who are in pursuit of an Imperial force known as Shadow Wing. The novel also has connections to the Marvel Comics miniseries titled Star Wars: TIE Fighter. A follow-up novel, Shadow Fall, saw publication in 2020.
As a brutal war nears its end, five New Republic pilots transition from being the hunted to becoming the hunters in this grand STAR WARS story. Alphabet Squadron, set after Return of the Jedi, tells the story of a one-of-a-kind team, with each member piloting a different type of starfighter as they strive to bring their war to a close.
The Emperor is no more, and his ultimate weapon has been obliterated. The Imperial Army is in chaos. Amidst this turmoil, Yrica Quell finds herself among numerous defectors from her previous allegiance, residing in a shantytown for deserters. Her life takes a turn when she is chosen to join Alphabet Squadron.
This squadron is a diverse mix of pilots and starfighters. Hera Syndulla, a New Republic general, personally tasks the five members of Alphabet with a mission. Like Yrica, each pilot is skilled but struggles to find their place in a changing galaxy. Their objective is to locate and eliminate the enigmatic Shadow Wing, a deadly force of TIE fighters that are carrying out violent acts of revenge as their power wanes.
The newly established unit perfectly captures the spirit of the Rebellion: a resourceful, scrappy, and daring group emboldened by their most significant victory in decades. However, the transition from underdog rebels to celebrated heroes is not straightforward, and their internal struggles pose as much of a threat as their enemies in space. The rebellious warriors of Alphabet Squad must learn to work together if they hope to safeguard the new era of peace they have fought so hard to secure.
