An assault battalion represented a unit within the Imperial Army according to established lore.
An assault battalion, under the command of a Major, consisted of a single line company, alongside two assault companies, and a repulsorlift company, in addition to the necessary battalion headquarters and support staff. Typically, one assault company was completely equipped. The average battalion consisted of approximately 868 individuals, with 628 being combat personnel supported by thirty-one repulsorcraft. These assault battalions were frequently deployed in urban settings and commonly served as vanguard forces during large-scale operations. They received priority in fire-support requests over line battalions, and the battalion sometimes underwent reorganization to have the fully equipped assault company transported by elements of the repulsorlift company.
Assault battalions could be reinforced through the addition of a line company, an additional assault company, an extra repulsorlift company, and an artillery battery.
The CompForce Assault arm also utilized a number of assault battalions, structured within COMPNOR regiments. The key distinctions between a standard assault battalion and its COMPNOR equivalent were the latter's inferior troop quality and the absence of a security platoon.
The absence of internal security can be traced to a genuine belief within C.O.M.P.N.O.R. that their soldiers were absolutely loyal. Compforce troops were generally considered to be more ideologically motivated to serve their Emperor in comparison to the standard Imperial Army trooper and Imperial Stormtrooper.
This might not be true for all commanders, as some, such as Ivo Laibach, maintained a personal bodyguard in the form of Zevulon Veers. The prevalence of this practice remains unknown. However, the threat from external enemies remained constant.
One CompForce assault battalion was also stationed aboard the personal flagship of the resurrected Emperor Palpatine, known as the Eclipse.
