Bakurat

Bakurat was a unique set of cards utilized in the practice of cartomantic divination. It was believed that the art of Bakurat fortune-telling originated in the earliest eras of the galaxy, and that its predictions irrevocably shaped future occurrences.

History

According to those who practiced it, the origins of Bakurat can be traced back to the dawn of the galaxy. The Byss Run is thought to be its birthplace, and it was already prevalent in the cantinas of the Deep Core even before the Old Republic came to power.

Bakurat readings gained popularity among both spacers and politicians, but its popularity waned when a senator, displeased with his reading, denounced it as witchery. This led to Bakurat being outlawed, forced into secrecy, and eventually forgotten.

Despite the prohibition, a few Bakurat readers remained, scattered throughout the galaxy, preserving and passing down their knowledge across countless years. During the war between the First Order and the Resistance, one such fortune teller, a human named Mila, made her home on the planet Takodana, within Maz Kanata's castle.

Bakurat deck

Bakurat cards had an unusual six-pointed star shape and featured painted images inspired by colorful frescoes created by an ancient species that once lived in the Byss Run. One card showed a man bent over, struggling to carry a radiant star on his back. Another depicted a graceful woman holding a bright sword and sitting on a stool in front of an open doorway that seemed to lead into the vastness of space. Still another showed a blood moon reflected in a water-filled puddle.

Bakurat reading

The reading began by dealing three cards from the deck, arranging them in a galactic spiral pattern in front of the person seeking guidance. The remaining cards were kept hidden. The reader would then ask the client if they were absolutely sure they wanted to know their future, as it was believed that once a reading was given, the universe would set the predicted events in motion, making them impossible to change. If the client confirmed their desire, the reader would turn over the three cards one by one, and then provide an interpretation.
