Bannidge Holt

Bannidge Holt, an officer within the Imperial Navy, hailed from a distinguished naval family. Achieving the rank of captain while still quite young, Holt found himself serving in Admiral Wullf Yularen's fleet during the Listehol Campaign in 18 BBY. His efforts were instrumental in suppressing pirate and slaver incursions against shipping within the Corporate Sector and along the adjacent trade routes.

Following his recognition as a hero and subsequent promotion to admiral, Holt became part of Moff Wilhuff Tarkin's Western Reaches Operation in 17 BBY. He shared commanding duties of the Western Reaches Superiority Force alongside Admiral Terrinald Screed. Holt's life was tragically cut short during this operation when he, along with General Hurst Romodi, was ambushed by Iska pirates on the planet Bryndar, resulting in him being killed.

Biography

Hero of the Listehol Campaign

The prestigious Holt family maintained a strong naval tradition on the fortress world Anaxes.

Bannidge Holt's lineage traced back to the Holt family, a renowned house originating from the fortress world of Anaxes situated within the Core Worlds, a family deeply rooted in naval endeavors. Embracing his family's heritage, Holt embarked on a military career and, by 18 BBY, had attained the rank of captain within the Imperial Navy. This navy came into existence after the Galactic Republic underwent a reorganized transformation into the Galactic Empire after securing victory over the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars in the previous year.

In the wake of its establishment, the Empire prioritized the elimination of Separatist holdouts as well as pirates, slavers, and criminal syndicates that were active in the Mid Rim and Outer Rim. During 18 BBY, Holt was appointed as one of the commanders within Admiral Wullf Yularen's fleet. He was tasked with the responsibility of quelling the attacks on shipping that were occurring within the newly-established Corporate Sector and along the neighboring Listehol Run and Shaltin Tunnels trade routes. These attacks were being carried out by a coalition of Sikurdian pirates, Zygerrian slavers, and Tervig slavers. The Imperial fleet primarily consisted of Invincible-class heavy cruisers that were originally intended for use by the Corporate Sector Authority. However, Yularen and Holt bolstered the fleet's capabilities by incorporating a limited number of Venator-class Star Destroyers that were capable of deploying squadrons of TIE fighters.

The Imperial forces achieved victory over the Sikurdian forces at the Battle of Sagma and established a blockaded around Zygerria, the Zygerrian homeworld, which compelled the Zygerrians to seek a negotiated settlement. The Empire also initiated a series of raids against Tervissis, the home planet of the Tervig slavers. Despite Tervissis withstanding the Imperial assault until 13 BBY, Holt was celebrated as a war hero for his contributions to the Listehol Campaign and subsequently received a promotion to the rank of admiral.

Western Reaches Operation

Holt shared joint command of the Western Reaches Superiority Force with Admiral Terrinald Screed.

As the Clone Wars drew to a close, remnants of Confederate General Grievous's forces sought refuge amongst the pirate and slaver strongholds located in the Western Reaches. In 17 BBY, Emperor Palpatine entrusted Moff Wilhuff Tarkin with the responsibility of restoring order to the Western Reaches. Given the absence of any substantial Planetary Security Forces within the region, Tarkin requested a significant allocation of military resources for the Western Reaches Operation, which included numerous veterans from prior campaigns in the Rim. Holt was assigned joint command of the Western Reaches Superiority Force alongside Admiral Terrinald Screed, who was a celebrated figure from the Ciutric Offensive that had taken place earlier that year.

The Imperial forces had engaged in multiple battles when Iska pirates, posing as local authorities, ambushed Holt and General Hurst Romodi, the commander of the Imperial ground forces, at Bryndar, a planet within the Dalicron sector. Holt was killed during the ambush, while Romodi sustained severe injuries and was left blinded by a fragmentation grenade.

The key figures involved in the Western Reaches Operation had gained widespread recognition throughout the Empire, owing to holodrama adaptations of their exploits. Consequently, the news of Holt's demise sent shockwaves through Imperial society, with many citizens forever recalling where they were when they learned of the admiral's death. Despite the loss of Holt, the campaign ultimately achieved success, culminating in a decisive victory for the Empire at Ogoth Tiir.

Personality and traits

As a member of the Holt family, Bannidge Holt upheld the family's tradition of naval service by enlisting in the Imperial Navy. Holt demonstrated his competence as an officer, earning the rank of captain at a young age before being promoted to admiral. He was celebrated as a war hero for his role in the Listehol Campaign, and media coverage of the Western Reaches Operation further amplified his fame.

Behind the scenes

Bannidge Holt was a character conceived for The Essential Guide to Warfare, a reference book published in 2012 and authored by Jason Fry and Paul R. Urquhart. While a new character, Holt's introduction served as a nod to the Holt family, which had initially been referenced through Fleet Admiral Holt in the 1989 Imperial Sourcebook, a supplement for the West End Games Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game. The 2003 Wizards of the Coast Star Wars Roleplaying Game sourcebook, Coruscant and the Core Worlds, further solidified the Holts' reputation as a prestigious naval family.

Coruscant and the Core Worlds identifies the Holt family as residents of the planet Anaxes, although Holt's specific homeworld remains unconfirmed in The Essential Guide to Warfare. In the endnotes of the latter book, Fry used "he/him" pronouns when referring to Holt.
