Barefoot Squadron was a New Republic squadron of starfighters that flew X-wing starfighters. This squadron was established between the years of 27 ABY and 28 ABY during the period of the Yuuzhan Vong War. The young Jedi Knight Tahiri Veila commanded the squadron, which primarily consisted of inexperienced pilots. The squadron's name originated from Veila's habit of going barefoot. To assist with administrative tasks, an executive officer was assigned to the squadron.
During the Yuuzhan Vong War, which saw the invasion of the galaxy by the extra-galactic Yuuzhan Vong, the New Republic created numerous starfighter squadrons between 27 ABY and 28 ABY. This was done by combining newly graduated pilots from flight academies with more seasoned pilots from existing squadrons to form new units. Barefoot Squadron was one such unit, largely composed of rookie pilots. The commander of the squadron was the youthful Jedi Knight Tahiri Veila, whose preference for walking without shoes inspired the squadron's moniker. The pilots of Barefoot Squadron held Veila in high regard and were very protective of her. To aid Veila in managing bureaucratic processes and squadron organization, Admiral Traest Kre'fey of the New Republic assigned an executive officer to the squadron.
X-wings were the starfighters used by the members of Barefoot Squadron.
The eBook novella Ylesia, written by Walter Jon Williams in 2002 as part of The New Jedi Order series, was the first mention of Barefoot Squadron.
