Defense of Vladet
The defense of Vladet unfolded in 6 ABY as the New Republic launched an assault on Grand Isle, an Imperial base situated on the planet of Vladet. This attack targeted Grand Isle, which functioned as the Imperial command center for the Rachuk sector, and it was a response to a stormtrooper raid on Rogue Squadron's base located on Talasea.
Defender Wing served as the main attacking force, deploying thirty-six Y-wings with the mission to obliterate the Imperial base on Vladet. These Y-wings received an escort from Rogue Squadron's ten X-wings alongside the CR90 Corellian Corvette named Eridain. Champion and Guardian Squadrons, each supported by four X-wings, spearheaded the assault, while Warden Squadron was kept in reserve due to its smaller escort complement. Only four TIE fighters stood ready to defend the base, but they were swiftly eliminated. The Y-wings circumvented Grand Isle's shields by breaching the side of the dormant volcano crater where the base was positioned, subsequently destroying the base.
In the space surrounding Vladet, the Carrack-class cruiser [Expeditious] and Lancer-class frigate Ravager emerged from hyperspace. Despite arriving too late to defend Grand Isle, the Expeditious possessed superior firepower compared to the Eridain, and the Ravager posed a significant danger to the New Republic starfighters. However, Corran Horn devised a strategy to neutralize the Ravager. Ignoring General Horton Salm's misgivings, Horn instructed Warden Squadron to target his own X-wing with their proton torpedoes as he flew towards the Lancer-class frigate. At the last possible moment, he maneuvered his X-wing beneath the Ravager, resulting in twenty-two torpedoes striking and destroying the ship. Two torpedoes, launched slightly late, continued to pursue Horn's X-wing until his R2 unit, Whistler, disabled its targeting beacon.
Having completed their objective, the New Republic forces then retreated from Vladet, compelling the Empire to allocate additional resources to reconstruct their sector headquarters. Lieutenant Horn faced temporary suspension from duty, as General Salm had never formally authorized him to assume command of Warden Squadron.
