Beggar's Canyon Incident

The Beggar's Canyon Incident is an event that transpired on the desert planet of Tatooine. During this event, Jabba's swoop gang launched an assault against Luke Skywalker near Ben Kenobi's hut.

Background

Subsequent to the Battle of Gall, Luke discovered that Janson's droid had been programmed with the intent to eliminate him by a technician. Wedge then fatally shot the technician, revealing that she had been compensated by Vader (though the actual orchestrator was Guri). Leia made the decision to establish contact with an underground organization, with the hope of uncovering the party responsible. Regrettably, she chose to engage with the Black Sun, unaware that Xizor was the individual desiring Luke's demise. Furthermore, Leia requested that Luke travel to Tatooine following an encounter with Boba Fett, not realizing that Xizor anticipated this move. She also secretly engaged Rendar to shadow and safeguard him.

Big Gizz, while socializing in town with his associates, was confronted by a mysterious figure named Jix in Mos Eisley. Gizz was impressed by Jix's willingness to deceive when Jix absconded with Spiker's swoop. Jabba then received a transmission that overrode Jix's directives to ensure Luke's survival, stating that Luke was present and more valuable deceased. Following a discussion in Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina overheard by Dash, Jix and the gang sped off with the intention of killing Luke.

The pursuit

At Ben Kenobi's residence, Luke was experimenting with the new lightsaber that he had assembled using instructions found within Ben Kenobi's book. Upon the arrival of the swoop bikers, Luke deflected multiple blaster shots before overpowering one of the riders and commandeering a bike. This chase unfolded through the winding paths of Beggar's Canyon, with Dash following closely behind. Amidst the chaos, Jix covertly aided Luke by sabotaging his comrades' attempts to strike him. When Spiker gained a clear line of sight on Luke, Jix intentionally collided his swoop with Spiker's to preserve Luke's life. The number of pursuers was reduced, and Luke evaded them by navigating through the Stone Needle. Subsequently, Rendar arrived, descended into the canyon, and unleashed fire, causing the remaining pursuers to disperse and flee. Although Jix sustained a broken leg in the crash, Spiker was left near death. Gizz, having fallen from his bike, aimed his rifle at Luke, only to be struck in the head with a rock thrown by Jix.

Aftermath

After successfully defending against an assault from a swoop gang, Skywalker came across a message droid that was initially directed towards Organa, who had proceeded to meet with representatives from Black Sun. However, Skywalker managed to decipher the password, revealing the message. The message originated from Koth Melan, a Bothan spymaster, who claimed to possess crucial information for the Alliance and requested an immediate meeting on Bothawui. Skywalker, accompanied by Rendar, journeyed to meet with Melan.

Behind the scenes

The Chase is depicted in almost all forms of media related to the Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire multimedia project, with the comic series providing further detail on its origins and the individuals involved.[5]

Continuity editor Allan Kausch compiled a summary outlining the core actions of the Chase, ensuring consistent portrayal across various media. In that memo from June, key elements were identified, including Luke's self-defense using his new lightsaber, the theft of a swoop, the escape into the Canyon, the Dead Man's Turn, and the Eye of the Needle.

The Chase as depicted in the video game differs from its portrayal in other media, showcasing Dash Rendar eliminating all of Gizz's Gang within Mos Eisley. There is no courier droid present, and Luke is the one who informs Rendar about the Suprosa mission. Additionally, Luke is seen wearing his black uniform from Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, rather than the casual jacketed attire he wears in other Shadows storyline media. The 3D environment of Mos Eisley, along with the "conehead" swoop bikers, are largely inspired by concept art created by Industrial Light and Magic for the special edition of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.
