A birth certificate functioned as an identification document. Leia Organa lost this crucial piece of identification when the Galactic Empire obliterated her homeworld of Alderaan in 0 BBY during its destruction. Five years afterward, Organa, accompanied by Han Solo, journeyed to Hologram Fun World for their impending marriage. There, they encountered their acquaintance Lando Calrissian, who held the position of baron administrator for that world. Following several arrangements, Calrissian informed the couple that they needed to present their birth certificates for scanning by the Fun World Document Droids at the administration building. Solo revealed he had left his at his sky house on the planet Bespin, while Organa recounted the loss of hers. Calrissian then offered to procure replacement birth certificates from the Document Bureau, but explained that this was impossible that night because of its early closing for Fun World Founder's Day. The administrator then assured them that he would take care of the new documents the next day.
The concept of birth certificates was initially introduced in Queen of the Empire, a junior novel from 1993 authored by Paul Davids and Hollace Davids.
