Terry Bisson penned the junior novel, Boba Fett: The Fight to Survive, a Star Wars Legends tale. The book represents the initial installment in the Star Wars: Boba Fett series and saw its original publication on April 23, 2002. The sequel, Boba Fett: Crossfire, followed later in the same year.
The narrative unfolds in 22 BBY, synchronous with the events depicted in the motion picture Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones, charting the journey of a youthful Boba Fett as he undergoes training to become a bounty hunter.
Boba Fett's circumstances set him apart from other boys. His father, Jango Fett, earns his living as a bounty hunter. His home world, Kamino, serves as the base for a massive clone army. He lacks both friends and formal education. However, he possesses a clear path forward: a future career as a bounty hunter.
This future arrives unexpectedly soon. Suddenly, Boba Fett finds himself alone, navigating a perilous galaxy. He must rely on his physical prowess, his intellect, and the valuable lessons imparted by his father to ensure his survival and exact vengeance.
As he matures, Boba Fett will achieve notoriety as one of the galaxy's most dreaded bounty hunters.
But first, he must successfully navigate the challenges of his formative years.
Boba Fett's story begins on Kamino, a rain-soaked planet situated in the Outer Rim. His deepest aspiration is to emulate his father and ascend to the rank of the galaxy's premier bounty hunter. Boba's father departs alongside Zam Wesell for a mission. Upon Jango's return, he informs Boba of Zam's death. Subsequently, Boba receives a black book, with instructions from his father to only open it upon his own demise.
Shortly after Jango's return to Kamino, a Jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi, arrives to investigate Jango Fett and inspect the clone army. Jango and Obi-Wan meet, but following their interaction, Jango informs his son of their imminent departure. Boba proceeds to Whrr, the Kamino librarian droid, to return some books, inadvertently including the black book in the pile. Boba flees and boards Slave I, his father's vessel, witnessing his father's battle with the Jedi on the landing platform, seemingly culminating in Obi-Wan's fall into Kamino's ocean.
The Jedi gives chase to Slave I. Jango deployed seismic charges within an asteroid field, after which, with no sign of the Jedi or his ship, Jango and Boba presumed his death.
The pair landed at a stalagmite city, located on Geonosis. Boba was assigned a room and cautioned by Jango to "Be here when I get back." Defying his father's instruction, Boba leaves his room to explore the city. During his exploration, he investigates an unusual noise, discovering the droid factory. Aware of the potential consequences of being caught, Boba rushes back to his room, arriving just before his father's return. His father reiterates the instruction to remain in his room.
Once again disobeying his father, Boba leaves the room. He ventures beyond the city limits, exploring the surrounding mesas and plateaus. He encounters a sand snake under attack by two massiffs. The massiffs notice Boba and advance towards him. Boba eliminates one by causing it to fall off a cliff after slashing at it with a piece of mica. The remaining massiff flees after being attacked.
While wandering, Boba discovers Obi-Wan Kenobi, who has somehow survived their space battle. Boba alerts the guards by reflecting light off his piece of mica into the massiff's eyes. Droidekas engage and capture the Jedi, thanks to Boba's warning. Boba returns to his room, where his father addresses his disobedience. Jango then accompanies Boba to the Arena for the executions of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Padmé Amidala. Boba is captivated by the three beasts, the reek, nexu, and acklay, designated as the executioners.
Boba observes as Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Padmé escape, initiating an attack on the Separatists with the aid of newly arrived Jedi and the clone army. This marks the beginning of the Clone Wars. Amidst the intense battle, Boba witnesses his father's death at the hands of Mace Windu. Following the battle, Boba retrieves his father's armor and performs a burial. Boba then returns to Slave I, opens the black book and discovers a message from his father, instructing him to seek out Jabba the Hutt and Count Dooku.
Boba recalls that his father was recruited on one of the moons of Bogden and travels to Bogg 4. There, he encounters Aia, a pickpocket. He also interacts with various individuals who provide information on Count Dooku's whereabouts. Upon returning to Slave I, he discovers that Gjon has stolen his ship. Aia advises Boba to visit Gjon's workshop to reclaim his vessel, but Gjon proposes an alternative: a job offer. Gjon suggests a scheme to steal counterfeit credits to generate income. The trio successfully steals a basket of credits, but a security guard intervenes. After Boba uses Slave I to send the security guard—actually a hijacker—into the atmosphere, the group celebrates quietly, and Aia pickpockets Boba, leaving him penniless.
Boba returns to Slave I and proceeds to the bar where he was told he would find Count Dooku. The individuals who directed him there turn out to be bounty hunters. The bartender detains Boba until another bounty hunter, Aurra Sing, intervenes and stuns the bartender. She abducts Boba and transports him to the galaxy's trash planet, Raxus Prime. Aurra Sing abandons Boba on the planet and departs in Slave 1. Boba discovers a hidden doorway in a trash heap that leads to Count Dooku's base.
The Fight to Survive presents events from Boba's point of view, detailing occurrences that take place before, during, and after the events of the film Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones. This novel marks the first instance of pairing Boba with the bounty hunter Aurra Sing, a connection that was not revisited until the second season of the television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
