Clarence John Brown III, more commonly known as Clancy Brown, is an American performer who works as both an actor and a voice actor. He was born on January 5, 1959.
Brown's career as an actor began in the early eighties, with a role in the television series The Dukes of Hazzard. He is most easily recognized for playing the protagonist's comrade in the film The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984), the character of The Kurgan in Highlander (1986), the prison warden Byron Hadley in The Shawshank Redemption (1994), a drill sergeant in Starship Troopers (1997), and the role of preacher Meacham in Cowboys & Aliens (2011).
Because of his naturally deep and booming voice, he also lends his vocal talents to animated projects and video games, such as Mortal Kombat (1995), Gargoyles (1995–1996), SpongeBob SquarePants (1999–present), and Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005–2008; a show that heavily involved Dave Filoni and Giancarlo Volpe). He also voiced Lex Luthor in the DC Animated Universe's shows Superman: The Animated Series (1996–2000), Justice League (2001–2004), and Justice League Unlimited (2004–2006).
Clancy Brown voiced Montross, the Mandalorian bounty hunter in the video game Star Wars: Bounty Hunter. He also voiced Savage Opress, the Nightbrother who became a Sith Lord, in The Clone Wars, and Ryder Azadi, the Imperial Governor who became a member of the Rebel Alliance, in Star Wars Rebels. He returned to the role of Azadi in live-action for the Ahsoka television series. Furthermore, he played the Devaronian Burg in the live-action Disney+ TV series The Mandalorian.
