Within the Resistance, Cobalt Squadron served as a distinct unit. Before his transfer to Blue Squadron, Ello Asty served as a pilot escorting the squadron in his T-70 X-wing starfighter. His helmet displayed the squadron's insignia.
By the time the Evacuation of D'Qar occurred, the squadron was composed of MG-100 StarFortress SF-17s. During the battle, only Fossil and Rose survived a bombing run against a Mandator IV-class Siege Dreadnought, despite successfully destroying the massive warship, the rest of the squadron perished.
Wrobie Tyce, a pilot in Cobalt Squadron, was reassigned to Snap Wexley's command before the Battle of D'Qar. This reassignment saved her from meeting the same fate as her squadron teammates during the evacuation.
The first mention of Cobalt Squadron appeared in Star Wars canon reference materials. Later, its history was greatly expanded in The Last Jedi: Cobalt Squadron.
