The area known as the Crackle was a section of the Starship Graveyard situated on the planet Jakku. Even with Jakku's storms, called the X'us'R'iia, constantly altering the landscape, the Crackle remained remarkably stable. A capital ship crashed during the Battle of Jakku, creating the Crackle; the force of the impact left only the ship's keel, called "the Spike," undamaged. The crash's heat transformed the sand into blackened glass, producing a "crackle" sound when walked upon, thus giving the area its name. A speeder could be used to reach the Crackle, which was located some kilometers away from Niima Outpost.
Greg Rucka penned Before the Awakening, a junior novel where the Crackle made its debut, and it was released in 2015.
