Deep-fried coin-crabs represented a type of dish featuring seafood, and they were available at the bar inside the Horizon Hotel, which was located on the Outer Rim world of Taris. These small and flavorful crabs were sourced from the local coin-crabs, a species of crustacean native to the Tarisian coastlines; the crabs were then deep-fried and presented to customers in bowls.
During a visit to the Horizon Hotel in the year 40 ABY, the experienced Mandalorian soldier Goran Beviin placed an order for a serving of deep-fried coin-crabs. Beviin relished the crispy texture of the crabs, drawing a comparison between the deep-fried crustaceans and the extra-galactic Yuuzhan Vong, against whom the Mandalorians had battled nearly a decade earlier during the species' invasion of the galaxy.
The initial appearance of deep-fried coin-crabs within the Star Wars expanded universe occurred in Bloodlines, a Star Wars: Legacy of the Force novel crafted by author Karen Traviss and released on August 29, 2006.
