Goran Beviin

Goran Beviin existed as a Human male Mandalorian commando, operating as both a bounty hunter and a contract killer throughout the era of the New Republic and continuing into the initial period of the Galactic Alliance. In the year 24 ABY, Beviin found himself on Nar Shaddaa, where he encountered an individual named Udelen. This Udelen was later revealed to be a vanguard for the invading extragalactic species known as the Yuuzhan Vong. An agreement was struck between the Mandalorians and the Yuuzhan Vong, resulting in the Mandalorians becoming mercenaries in the Yuuzhan Vong's impending assault on the galaxy. However, following Beviin and the Mandalorians' defiance of an order to capture a Jedi named Kubariet on New Holgha, the Mandalorians shifted their allegiance and began opposing the Yuuzhan Vong. Beviin participated in the Yuuzhan Vong War alongside Kubariet, and after the conflict, he established a life on his farm located on the planet Mandalore with his husband, Medrit Vasur. He held the position of one of Boba Fett's most reliable lieutenants and was even asked to serve as Mandalore in an interim capacity during Fett's absences. In 41 ABY, Beviin assisted Fett in the training of Jedi Knight Jaina Solo to prepare her for confronting her Sith Lord brother, Darth Caedus.

Biography

Early life

Born on the planet of Mandalore sometime between 19 BBY and 16 BBY, Goran Beviin was a Human male who belonged to the Mandalorian culture. Beviin lived during the time when Fenn Shysa was uniting the Mandalorians after the Imperial occupation of Mandalore, an event he remembered well. At some point, he encountered the blacksmith Medrit Vasur, and the two men entered into marriage, residing on the Beviin-Vasur farm situated near the Mandalorian city of Keldabe.

Working for the Yuuzhan Vong

While at the Bar Jaraniz on Nar Shaddaa, Beviin was approached by a person identifying himself as Udelen. Udelen's request was for Beviin to kill Tholote B'Leph, an opposition leader on Ter Abbes. Udelen asserted that B'Leph was accepting bribes and unfairly awarding government contracts and needed to be eliminated before the upcoming elections the next month. For this service, Udelen offered Beviin a sum of one hundred thousand credits. Beviin, feeling uneasy about assassinating a political opponent and the potential for unrest on Ter Abbes, departed the bar to board his Gladiator assault fighter, the Beroya, and contacted Mand'alor Boba Fett. Fett, aware of Beviin's current financial struggles, instructed him to accept the contract. Beviin then returned to the bar to finalize the agreement.

Nom Anor, a vanguard of the Yuuzhan Vong, concealed his true identity to hire Goran Beviin.

While on Nar Shaddaa, Beviin encountered two Mandalorian women, Briika Jeban, a widow, and her daughter, Dinua, whom Beviin decided to take under his protection. Briika and Dinua accompanied Beviin to a meeting with Udelen's associates. As Beviin and a group of Mandalorians, including Boba Fett, awaited Udelen's arrival, they were ambushed by an unfamiliar type of fleet. These unusual ships were commanded by Udelen, who then revealed his true identity as Nom Anor, a vanguard of the Yuuzhan Vong, an extragalactic species with intentions of seizing control of the galaxy.

The Yuuzhan Vong permitted Beviin and Fett to board the fleet's flagship for negotiations. Fett instructed Beviin to maintain awareness while on the Yuuzhan Vong's organic vessel and to collect small samples of the organic technology present. During the meeting, Anor informed Beviin and Fett that the Mandalorians had little choice but to aid the Yuuzhan Vong in their galactic conquest. Anor promised generous compensation for the Mandalorians' assistance, which Fett accepted, stipulating that the Yuuzhan Vong would leave the Mandalore sector untouched during the invasion.

Subsequently, Anor tasked the Mandalorians with securing a landing zone for the Yuuzhan Vong on the Outer Rim planet of Birgis. A week after the invasion of Helska IV by the Yuuzhan Vong, Beviin and the Mandalorians launched an assault on Birgis' spaceport. Upon landing, Fett detonated a large water tower near the spaceport, creating a diversion for the guards and personnel. Following this, Beviin and the Mandalorians stormed the main building of the spaceport, securing it for the Yuuzhan Vong ground invasion.

Following the Battle of New Holgha, Bur'lorr, a Yuuzhan Vong subaltern, commanded Beviin and the Mandalorians to locate and capture alive a Jedi named Kubariet, who was still on New Holgha. The Mandalorians located him easily, finding him wounded on a rooftop. However, they defied their orders, and, realizing that Mandalore had no future with the Yuuzhan Vong, allowed the Jedi to escape. A nearby Yuuzhan Vong warrior attacked Beviin after the Mandalorians disobeyed their orders; however, the Mandalorians attacked and killed the warrior, although Briika Jeban was killed in the battle, which officially ended their short-lived affiliation with the Yuuzhan Vong. After her mother's passing, Beviin adopted Dinua.

Beviin participated in the Yuuzhan Vong War alongside Boba Fett, the Mandalorians, and Kubariet, including the Battle of Mandalore, where the Yuuzhan Vong were defeated, although the Mandalorian Protectors suffered significant losses.

Settled down

Following the Yuuzhan Vong War, Beviin settled on Mandalore with his husband, Medrit Vasur, and their adopted daughter, Dinua. In time, he became one of Boba Fett's most trusted advisors. In 40 ABY, Thrackan Sal-Solo, a Corellian politician, approached Beviin with an offer to assassinate the entire Solo family. Beviin declined, stating that he only targeted individuals, not families. He informed Boba Fett of this offer on the planet Taris, along with news regarding Fett's daughter, Ailyn Vel, who was alive and operating under the alias Ailyn Habuur. Fett had been uncertain of his daughter's fate; she had pursued him for some time, angered by his abandonment of her and her mother, Sintas Vel, but had not been seen for years.

Boba Fett regarded Goran Beviin as his most trusted lieutenant.

Subsequently, Boba Fett contacted Beviin, informing him that Sal-Solo sought the Mandalorians' assistance in defending Centerpoint Station. Beviin was instructed to gather as many commandos as possible and meet Fett on Drall in two days. After the allotted time, Beviin managed to assemble a group of six Mandalorians. During the meeting on Drall, Beviin expressed to Fett that he was a poor Mand'alor, and that after the devastation of the Yuuzhan Vong War, the Mandalorians required more than just a figurehead. He spoke of Kad'ika, a man whom Beviin believed would be a suitable Mand'alor. Following the assassination of Thrackan Sal-Solo, Beviin informed Fett of Ailyn Vel's death.

Later that year, Boba Fett departed Mandalore for a brief period and appointed Beviin, his most trusted lieutenant, as acting Mand'alor in his absence. During his brief tenure, Beviin primarily remained at home, tending to his farm, which had been struggling recently. Upon Fett's return, he shared one of his deepest secrets with Beviin, revealing that he was terminally ill and did not have much time left. At the same time, Beviin revealed that drillers had discovered a substantial deposit of beskar, Mandalorian iron, which could usher in an era of significant economic growth for Mandalore.

The ailing Fett stayed at Beviin's farm for a period after this revelation, and, thanks to a DNA sample from Jaing Skirata, was close to being healed through a transfusion. Beviin, along with Fett's granddaughter Mirta Gev and her fiancé Ghes Orade, visited Fett when he underwent his life-saving transfusion. After Fett's surgery, Beviin presented him with the Bes'uliik, a new starfighter constructed from the recently discovered Mandalorian iron.

Training Jaina Solo

Goran Beviin was one of many Mandalorians who trained Jedi Knight Jaina Solo.

In 40 ABY, the body of Boba Fett's long-missing ex-wife Sintas Vel was discovered encased in carbonite. Beviin was present when Doctor Beluine freed her from her carbonite prison and welcomed Vel as a guest at his farm, providing her with temporary lodging as she recovered from the amnesia, blindness, and other side effects resulting from her years of carbonite stasis. When Jedi Knight Jaina Solo arrived on Mandalore seeking Fett's guidance to defeat her Sith Lord brother, Darth Caedus, Beviin greeted her at the Oyu'baat tapcafe in Keldabe. Beviin became one of the many Mandalorians who trained Solo, allowing her to stay at his farm during her training.

Shortly after Solo's arrival, Beviin took her to Fenn Shysa's memorial, a former Mandalore, and shared some Mandalorian history with her. He then engaged in a training duel with the Jedi, during which Beviin overpowered Solo. They sparred several more times, with Beviin consistently dominating, forcing her to rely on the Force. Following these training sessions, Beviin urged Solo to be completely focused on eliminating her opponent, to become a different Jaina. Solo disagreed, perceiving that Beviin was teaching her hate, but Beviin clarified that it was not hate, but total war. Despite his reassurances, she still felt that his fighting style and lessons were aligned with the dark side. Around this time Beviin also attended the wedding party of Mirta Gev and Ghes Orade.

During the Second Battle of Roche, a group of Mandalorians were deployed to eliminate a group of Imperial Moffs. Beviin was ordered to remain on Mandalore and stayed there until the conclusion of the Second Galactic Civil War.

Personality and traits

Beviin was a Human male with gray hair. He lived with his husband, Medrit Vasur, and they later adopted a daughter, Dinua Jeban. Beviin was a family-oriented individual who welcomed guests to his farm. Boba Fett regarded Beviin as possessing great heart and courage, unafraid of the pain of love, and considered him the closest he had to a friend. Fett believed Beviin would be a capable Mand'alor, but Beviin preferred to remain on his farm rather than lead. He harbored a deep hatred for the Yuuzhan Vong and advocated for their complete extermination. He also disliked the Jedi, describing Kubariet as "the only Jedi I've ever trusted."

Equipment

Beviin was known for his traditionalism and used older equipment, including blue beskar armor and a Mandalorian saber known as a beskad. He also utilized highly illegal crushgaunts.

Behind the scenes

Author Karen Traviss created the character Goran Beviin for her e-book, Boba Fett: A Practical Man, which was released in August 2006. His name is derived from the Mando'a words "goran," meaning "smith," and "beviin," meaning "lance."

While Beviin's husband, Medrit Vasur, was initially mentioned in Boba Fett: A Practical Man, his gender was not specified until his first appearance in Legacy of the Force: Sacrifice, also by Karen Traviss. Vasur was described as Beviin's partner in Traviss' 2008 novel Legacy of the Force: Revelations, and by [September](/article/september] of that year, she expressed her intention that Beviin and Vasur were married, making them one of the first openly gay couples in Star Wars literature. In December 2008, The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia confirmed their in-universe marriage.
