The battle for Vladet's defense unfolded in 6 ABY when the forces of the New Republic launched an assault on Grand Isle, an Imperial base situated on the planet of Vladet. This Grand Isle installation functioned as the Imperial command center for the Rachuk sector, and the New Republic's offensive was a direct response to a stormtrooper raid that targeted Rogue Squadron's base located on Talasea.
Defender Wing, with its complement of thirty-six Y-wings, constituted the primary attack force, tasked with the destruction of the Imperial base on Vladet. They received escort from Rogue Squadron's ten X-wings along with the CR90 Corellian Corvette named Eridain. The assault was spearheaded by Champion and Guardian Squadrons, each supported by four X-wings, while Warden Squadron was kept in reserve due to its smaller escort complement. Only four TIE fighters were available to defend the base, and these were swiftly eliminated. The Y-wings circumvented Grand Isle's shields by breaching the side of the dormant volcano crater where it was positioned, subsequently destroying the base itself.
In the space surrounding Vladet, the Carrack-class cruiser [Expeditious] and the Lancer-class frigate Ravager emerged from hyperspace. Although they arrived too late to prevent the destruction of Grand Isle, the Expeditious possessed superior firepower compared to the Eridain, and the Ravager posed a significant danger to the New Republic starfighters. However, Corran Horn devised a rapid plan to neutralize the Ravager. Despite the objections of General Horton Salm, Horn directed Warden Squadron to target his own X-wing with their proton torpedoes as he flew toward the Lancer-class frigate. At the last possible moment, he maneuvered his X-wing under the Ravager, resulting in twenty-two torpedoes striking and destroying the frigate. Two torpedoes, launched slightly behind the others, continued to pursue Horn's X-wing until his R2 unit, Whistler, deactivated the targeting beacon.
Having completed their objective, the New Republic forces then retreated from Vladet, which compelled the Empire to allocate additional resources to reconstruct their sector headquarters. Lieutenant Horn was temporarily suspended from duty, given that General Salm had never officially authorized him to assume command of Warden Squadron.
