The brand name was displayed on the side using stylized Aurebesh characters. To maintain their chilled state, the bottles were kept in red, box-shaped containers filled with ice.
The Diet Coke product is inspired by the real-world sugar-free and zero-calorie carbonated beverage of the same name, manufactured by the Coca-Cola Company. The distinct spherical packaging was specifically designed for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge.
The concept came about following a tour of the Coke Archives by members of Walt Disney Imagineering, with specific attention paid to the Spencerian script used in the logos of various Coke products. Matt Cooper, an industrial designer at Coke, stated that the project challenged his team to "take their brands places they've never taken them to," specifically the world of Batuu. The intention was to design the bottles so they would appear as if they had been salvaged from a ship or abandoned on Batuu and repurposed, all while adhering to the aesthetic principles of the Star Wars universe. This collaboration between Coca-Cola and Disney is not unprecedented. Coca-Cola has been involved in assisting Disney since the opening of Disneyland in 1955.
A Diet Coke bottle makes a cameo appearance as an easter egg in the 2020 web series Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge, a game show for children set within the Star Wars galaxy. The bottle is visible during a non-canon segment of each episode, positioned near the Bridge of Balance, an element within the show's Jedi Temple set.
